Why Am I a Christian?

Pastor's Study

I was asked this week, “Why are you a Christian?”  That is the most basic of questions that can be asked to any follower of Christ; however, many of us don’t have a proper response.  I was asked the same question as a freshman in Bible College.  My – honest – answer was that I grew up in a Christian home, went to a Christian Church – I’ve always been Christian!  I came to understand that that answer held no weight when put to the test.   So, I began to search and discover (for myself) what I believed and why I believed it.  Here’s where I stand (now some 26 years later):  I believe that Jesus Christ loved me so much that He left heaven, came to earth and announced that He was THE ONLY way to God.  Many people in His day (as well as our own) thought Him to be a lunatic!  However, He stated that He would pay the price for the sin of man by dying on a Roman cross and prove who He was and what He said by rising from that tomb three days later.  After a life-time of study, my conclusion is this:  I am a follower of Jesus Christ because I cannot get away from the HISTORICAL FACT that HE ROSE FROM THAT TOMB!  Since that is true, I have placed my faith in His promise that He is the ONLY SAVIOR of mankind – My Savior.   I join the hymn writers of old:  “My faith has found a resting place, not in device nor creed…It is enough that Jesus died, and that He died for me!”

About Pastor

My Family: My wife and I have been married for 30 years (wow! that's hard to believe.) We have four wonderful children and EIGHT perfect grandchildren!! Education: I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Pastoral Theology from Tennessee Temple University. After serving Bethel Baptist Church in Ontario, Canada as Youth Pastor and South Buncombe Baptist in Asheville, NC as Associate Pastor, we moved to Wake Forest, NC where I attended Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. In 1995, I received my Master of Divinity degree (with languages.) From 1999-2001, I attended Southern Baptist Theological Seminary pursuing my Doctor of Ministry degree in Expository Preaching. Ministry: I have had the privilege of pastoring three wonderful congregations (Montwood Baptist 1993-1997; Union Baptist 1997-2002; and, South Fork Baptist 2010-present.) In 2010, God brought a very special group of people into my life. South Fork has become much more than a ministry to my family - it has become our home. If you are looking for a Church to call home, you will not find a better group of people than the family that makes up South Fork.
