What’s So Special About Christmas?

Her name is Maralyn VosSavant.  From 1986 – 1989, she held the distinction in the Guinness Book of World Records as the smarted person alive.  With an IQ clocking somewhere north of Einstein, do I dare disagree with one of her pronouncements?  Not long ago someone asked her if she had a wish for mankind, what it would be.  The Guiness Guru replied, “Sometimes I simply wish that we would all get what we deserve.”  Well, why not just ask for a worldwide dose of bubonic plague and call it a day?  As Shakespeare noted, “treat each man as he deserves and who would escape a whipping?”

Even better than Shakespeare is the comment of an unknown Southern Soldier during the Civil War.  General Robert E. Lee commanded the Great Army of Northern Virginia.  General Lee was also a West Point Graduate who survived that strict institution without accumulating a single demerit.  Classmates called him “The Marble Man.”  During the Civil War, a buck private stood before General Lee for an infraction of the rules.

The General, seeing the man tremble, said, “You don’t need to be afraid, son.  You’ll get justice here.”  To which Johnny Reb replied, “I know it, General.  That’s just what I’m afraid of!”

Think you’ll make heaven on your good works?  Romans 3:23 says you will stand one day before Christ, the Marble Man who knew NO sin.  Yes, you’ll get justice, all right, but I don’t think you’ll have much use for it!

Here’s what’s so special about Christmas…because of Jesus Christ, justice has yielded to mercy.  Mercy simply means that God is not going to give me what I deserve.  What I deserved was poured out on Jesus at the Cross!  To those who have trusted in Christ, His words will be, “You don’t need to be afraid, My child.  You’ll find Grace here!”

About Pastor

My Family: My wife and I have been married for 30 years (wow! that's hard to believe.) We have four wonderful children and EIGHT perfect grandchildren!! Education: I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Pastoral Theology from Tennessee Temple University. After serving Bethel Baptist Church in Ontario, Canada as Youth Pastor and South Buncombe Baptist in Asheville, NC as Associate Pastor, we moved to Wake Forest, NC where I attended Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. In 1995, I received my Master of Divinity degree (with languages.) From 1999-2001, I attended Southern Baptist Theological Seminary pursuing my Doctor of Ministry degree in Expository Preaching. Ministry: I have had the privilege of pastoring three wonderful congregations (Montwood Baptist 1993-1997; Union Baptist 1997-2002; and, South Fork Baptist 2010-present.) In 2010, God brought a very special group of people into my life. South Fork has become much more than a ministry to my family - it has become our home. If you are looking for a Church to call home, you will not find a better group of people than the family that makes up South Fork.
