“Distracted?”

Pastor's Study

The story is told about the venerable catcher of the New York Yankees, Yogi Berra and the Milwaukee Braves slugger, Hank Aaron. It was during the 1957 World Series.  As usual, Yogi was keeping up his ceaseless chatter intended to distract the Milwaukee batters.  Aaron came up, and as he stood there waiting for the pitch, Yogi tried to get into his head by saying: “You’re holding the bat wrong, Henry.  You should hold it so that you can read the label.”  Henry said nothing, but he promptly hit the next pitch into the left-field bleachers.  After tagging home plate, Aaron looked at Berra and said: “I didn’t come up here to read!”

I heard a recent message in which the pastor said, “Satan can’t kill us because Jesus has already defeated him, BUT Satan can distract us!”

I’m afraid many of us are standing at home plate reading the label of our bats and forgetting exactly why we are up there!

I wanted to remind us that the Church is in the business of MAKING DISCIPLES! That’s the commission.  That’s our job.  That’s what we are all about.

This is an ALL ENCOMPASSING mission. Because a disciple doesn’t only KNOW Jesus, a disciple is learning to FOLLOW Jesus and be SURRENDERED and SUBMISSIVE to the Lordship of Christ.  A Disciple is being taught to OBEY the commands of Christ; and thus, he is learning how to make disciples as well.

Church, this is OUR MISSION. But I’m afraid that we have gotten so busy DOING Church that we have been distracted from BEING THE Church!  Someone once said, “If Satan can’t make us Bad – He will make us BUSY!”

So, What are you doing TODAY to make disciples?

**Who have you told the Gospel to today?

**How have you encouraged a brother or sister today?

**What have you learned today that is growing you closer to Jesus?

I encourage all of us, let’s be busy working for the Kingdom of God! Let’s make it our goal in life to be Disciple-Makers!  By the way, it IS a matter of life and death!!

About Pastor

My Family: My wife and I have been married for 30 years (wow! that's hard to believe.) We have four wonderful children and EIGHT perfect grandchildren!! Education: I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Pastoral Theology from Tennessee Temple University. After serving Bethel Baptist Church in Ontario, Canada as Youth Pastor and South Buncombe Baptist in Asheville, NC as Associate Pastor, we moved to Wake Forest, NC where I attended Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. In 1995, I received my Master of Divinity degree (with languages.) From 1999-2001, I attended Southern Baptist Theological Seminary pursuing my Doctor of Ministry degree in Expository Preaching. Ministry: I have had the privilege of pastoring three wonderful congregations (Montwood Baptist 1993-1997; Union Baptist 1997-2002; and, South Fork Baptist 2010-present.) In 2010, God brought a very special group of people into my life. South Fork has become much more than a ministry to my family - it has become our home. If you are looking for a Church to call home, you will not find a better group of people than the family that makes up South Fork.
